Being Scared Shitless But Doing It Anyway

The Dream

I’ve been working on this dream for about 3 years now, and during that time I have often felt like an imposter, like someone who doesn’t know what the hell they’re doing. And the reason I feel that way is because I have no idea what the hell I’m doing.  I just know that I want to help other women like me.

I also just know that writing is therapeutic for me, and maybe because I’m an Aquarian, spilling my guts seems to be a natural trait that I sometimes regret possessing. But as I look back through my life, I see a common thread, a trait that I am grateful to possess, and that is courage.

The best protection any woman can have is courage. -Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Like many women, I can’t remember a lot of my childhood but there were problems in our family that helped shaped the woman I’ve become over the last 60+ years.  I spent decades trying to figure out those survival mechanisms that formed my personal characteristics but it was a complete waste of good energy. There’s no changing what happened or how I reacted to situations that surrounded me, or even the ones I created myself in the 1970’s when “sex, drugs, and rock and roll” was the actual lifestyle I chose for several years.

Embracing Change

Recognizing the Signs

One of the first steps in navigating midlife transitions is recognizing the signs. These can include feelings of restlessness, a desire for new experiences, or questioning past decisions. Understanding these signs can help you prepare for the changes ahead.

Adapting to New Roles

Midlife often brings role changes, whether it's becoming an empty nester, caring for aging parents, or transitioning in your career. Adapting to these new roles can be challenging, but it's important to approach them with flexibility and an open mind. Consider seeking support from friends, family, or professional counselors to ease these transitions.

Strategies for Navigating Transitions

Setting New Goals

Setting new goals is an effective way to navigate midlife transitions. Reflect on what truly matters to you and set realistic goals that align with your current values and aspirations. Whether it's pursuing a new hobby, advancing your career, or focusing on health and wellness, having clear objectives can provide direction and motivation.

Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle is essential during midlife transitions. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and sufficient sleep can improve both physical and mental well-being. Additionally, practicing mindfulness or meditation can help reduce stress and increase resilience during this phase of life.

Building a Support Network

Having a strong support network is invaluable when navigating midlife transitions. Building connections with others who are experiencing similar changes can provide comfort and guidance. Consider joining support groups or engaging in community activities to meet new people and share experiences.

Moreover, don't hesitate to reach out to professionals such as life coaches or therapists who specialize in midlife transitions. They can offer personalized advice and strategies tailored to your unique situation.

Looking Ahead with Optimism

Finally, it's important to look ahead with optimism. Midlife transitions, though challenging, can also be rewarding. Embrace this time as an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. By focusing on the positives and staying proactive, you can navigate this phase with confidence and grace.

Remember, midlife is not an end but a new beginning. It's a chance to redefine your path and create a fulfilling future for yourself. With the right approach, you can turn these transitions into transformative experiences that enrich your life.
